Now
concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed… Now
there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of
service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is
the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the
manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through
the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge
according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another
gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to
another prophecy…
Corinthians 12:1-10
Paul Cain is among the most respected prophetic
voice of recent times. During the 1950s he had an healing ministry but suddenly
dropped out of sight because, to quote his own words, he ‘seriously questioned
the methods and systems commonly employed in the healing ministry’. As a consequence,
he was almost unheard of until 1988, when he began to minister alongside John
Wimber of the Vineyard Fellowship. In many messages, he has spoken of a coming
financial catastrophe. The following quote comes from a sermon called, Dying to Live in Kansas City, preached
on New Year’s Eve 1998.
‘There will be economic pressure globally. I’m
talking about wholesale pressures, with a domino effect. Indonesia, Japan,
Russia, Brazil, Western Europe – and then, finally, the USA are all headed for
some serious problems.’
Rick Joyner of Morningstar Ministries has warned of
economic collapse. The vision he called, Field
of Dreams or Nightmares, which he had in August 1995, was published shortly
afterwards in the Morningstar Journal.
‘In this vision, I realized that the end of the field
indicated that the end of our economic prosperity is now in sight. What I saw
at the end was much more catastrophic than I had ever thought...’
This weekend, I have quoted just four of the more
prominent Christian ministers who have similar warnings and together their
testimony is significant enough to be taken seriously.
Many Christians struggle with the idea of modern
prophets and it is true that there are many self-declared ‘prophets’, some of
who are deliberately deceitful and some who are naively mistaken. It is also
the case that even the word of the most gifted prophet should be carefully
weighed (see I Corinthians 14:29 & I John 4:1).
I will conclude this line of thought tomorrow.
